The market near the Hôtel

The hotel is situated right in the town centre with easy access to all services. Directly opposite is the town square where there is a lively French market every Saturday morning.

The town, with about 2000 inhabitants, is rich in history and well worth exploring. Tennis courts and a new outdoor swimming pool are among the facilities on offer.

There are several historical places to visit, such as the Gallo-Roman château of Javarzay and in Pouzac a Merovingian cemetery where they discovered a jewel case made out of terra cotta. Places of interest include the local goat trails in many of the villages.

Jean-François Cail is one of the famous inhabitants; born in 1804, he became one of the most brilliant industrialists of the 19th century. Very much a man before his time, you can find out more in the audio-visual presentation at Javarzay. His name is one of those inscribed on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Further Afield

The surrounding area offers tennis, horse-riding, kayaking, boating and swimming, and you don't have to travel too far to find a golf course or a fishing lake either. The Hôtel des Voyageurs can organise these trips for you. Less sporty choices include trips to the Atlantic coast, to La Rochelle or the Ile de Ré; shopping and sightseeing excursions to the nearby large towns of Melle, Poitiers or Niort. Or take a leisurely boat trip down the peaceful waterways of the Marais Poitévin. The La Rochelle beaches offer award winning handicap assistance.

One of France's most visited attractions is the theme park of Futuroscope which is also only just over an hour's drive away and well worth a visit for the whole family.

A little further are the vineyards of Bordeaux, the distilleries of Cognac and the world famous zoo La Palmyre. The château at Chinon is being restored and has splendid views over the town and river.
